    Assistance dogs provide a useful behavioural model to enrich communicative skills of assistance robots

    These studies are part of a project aiming to reveal relevant aspects of human–dog interactions, which could serve as a model to design successful human-robot interactions. Presently there are no successfully commercialized assistance robots, however, assistance dogs work efficiently as partners for persons with disabilities. In Study 1, we analyzed the cooperation of 32 assistance dog–owner dyads performing a carrying task. We revealed typical behavior sequences and also differences depending on the dyads' experiences and on whether the owner was a wheelchair user. In Study 2, we investigated dogs' responses to unforeseen difficulties during a retrieving task in two contexts. Dogs displayed specific communicative and displacement behaviors, and a strong commitment to execute the insoluble task. Questionnaire data from Study 3 confirmed that these behaviors could successfully attenuate owners' disappointment. Although owners anticipated the technical competence of future assistance robots to be moderate/high, they could not imagine robots as emotional companions, which negatively affected their acceptance ratings of future robotic assistants. We propose that assistance dogs' cooperative behaviors and problem solving strategies should inspire the development of the relevant functions and social behaviors of assistance robots with limited manual and verbal skills

    Observation of Anomalous Internal Pair Creation in 8^8Be: A Possible Signature of a Light, Neutral Boson

    Electron-positron angular correlations were measured for the isovector magnetic dipole 17.6 MeV state (Jπ=1+J^\pi=1^+, T=1T=1) \rightarrow ground state (Jπ=0+J^\pi=0^+, T=0T=0) and the isoscalar magnetic dipole 18.15 MeV (Jπ=1+J^\pi=1^+, T=0T=0) state \rightarrow ground state transitions in 8^{8}Be. Significant deviation from the internal pair creation was observed at large angles in the angular correlation for the isoscalar transition with a confidence level of >5σ> 5\sigma. This observation might indicate that, in an intermediate step, a neutral isoscalar particle with a mass of 16.70±0.35\pm0.35 (stat)±0.5\pm 0.5 (sys) MeV/c2/c^2 and Jπ=1+J^\pi = 1^+ was created.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    e+ee^{+}e^{-} pairs from a nuclear transition signaling an elusive light neutral boson

    Electron-positron pairs have been observed in the 10.95-MeV 00+0^-\to0^+ decay in 16^{16}O. The branching ratio of the e+^+e^- pairs compared to the 3.84-MeV 02+0^-\to2^+ γ\gamma decay of the level is deduced to be 20(5)×10520(5)\times10^{-5}. This magnetic monopole (M0) transition cannot proceed by γ\gamma-ray decay and is, to first order, forbidden for internal pair creation. However, the transition may also proceed by the emission of a light neutral 00^{-} or 1+1^{+} boson. Indeed, we do observe a sharp peak in the e+ee^{+}e^{-} angular correlation with all the characteristics belonging to the intermediate emission of such a boson with an invariant mass of 8.5(5) MeV/c2^2. It may play a role in the current quest for light dark matter in the universe.Comment: 6 page

    Proton decay from the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in 58^{58}Ni

    Proton decay from the 3ω\hbar\omega isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in 58^{58}Ni has been measured using the (α,αp\alpha,\alpha'p) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered α\alpha particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of 57^{57}Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in 57^{57}Co were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation energy.Comment: Minor changes after review. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.     Why do dogs (Canis familiaris) select the empty container in an observational learning task?

    Many argue that dogs show unique susceptibility to human communicative signals that make them suitable for being engaged in complex co-operation with humans. It has also been revealed that socially provided information is particularly effective in influencing the behaviour of dogs even when the human’s action demonstration conveys inefficient or mistaken solution of task. It is unclear, however, how the communicative nature of the demonstration context and the presence of the human demonstrator affect the dogs’ object-choice behaviour in observational learning situations. In order to unfold the effects of these factors, 76 adult pet dogs could observe a communicative or a non-communicative demonstration in which the human retrieved a tennis ball from under an opaque container while manipulating another distant and obviously empty (transparent) one. Subjects were then allowed to choose either in the presence of the demonstrator or after she left the room. Results showed a significant main effect of the demonstration context (presence or absence of the human’s communicative signals), and we also found some evidence for the response-modifying effect of the presence of the human demonstrator during the dogs’ choice. That is, dogs predominantly chose the baited container, but if the demonstration context was communicative and the human was present during the dogs’ choice, subjects’ tendency to select the baited container has been reduced. In agreement with the studies showing sensitivity to human’s communicative signals in dogs, these findings point to a special form of social influence in observational learning situations when it comes to learning about causally opaque and less efficient (compared to what comes natural to the dog) action demonstrations

    Dogs can sense weak thermal radiation

    The dog rhinarium (naked and often moist skin on the nose-tip) is prominent and richly innervated, suggesting a sensory function. Compared to nose-tips of herbivorous artio- and perissodactyla, carnivoran rhinaria are considerably colder. We hypothesized that this coldness makes the dog rhinarium particularly sensitive to radiating heat. We trained three dogs to distinguish between two distant objects based on radiating heat; the neutral object was about ambient temperature, the warm object was about the same surface temperature as a furry mammal. In addition, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging on 13 awake dogs, comparing the responses to heat stimuli of about the same temperatures as in the behavioural experiment. The warm stimulus elicited increased neural response in the left somatosensory association cortex. Our results demonstrate a hitherto undiscovered sensory modality in a carnivoran species
